About
There is a ghostly sense of déjà vu, a poignant nostalgia for lost civilisations, the ancient times we have never experienced. This uncertain origin is what Kim continuously trace and reconstruct through ongoing research and exhibition series, .
unfolds as a series of spatial stages built from a mixture of architectural forms and ruins from diverse civilisations. Within this hybrid space, the work questions the fabricated nostalgia produced by Western archaeology and the colonial gaze.
As an artist who grew up at the centre of a former empire and now looks back as a migrant, Kim explores hybrid civilisations, postcolonial rewriting of history, violence and memory, trauma and recovery.
Rather than the familiar fear of the “invader” often depicted in narratives about ancient worlds, imagines the spectator as a third figure, one who is warmly welcomed into the splendour and journey of past civilisations.
