About
I seek to reveal the relationship between the individual and the collective through the medium of place. In the early stages of my practice, I focused on the unique situations that arise among people gathered in public spaces and the psychological changes experienced by individuals, developing site-specific installations and performances. Since 2016, I have moved away from physically intervening in spaces and begun exploring places of memory and symbolic significance, such as the former Japanese Government-General Building, later the Central Government Complex, and now the National Museum of Korea. I became interested in the collective memories tied to these sites and the hidden layers beneath them. This shift led me to question the historical narratives and cultural identities we have come to accept as social consensus. I began to examine how past events are recorded, interpreted, and transmitted. I have maintained a sustained interest in how personal memory, historical awareness, aesthetic sensibility, and identity are shaped because of living within the collective framework of the nation-state. Through my work, I aim to look beyond the nation and region to adopt an expanded perspective on the world. To this end, I construct narratives through extensive research and documentation, translating them into installations, videos, and prints in response to the exhibition space and its architectural context. Ultimately, I seek to offer audiences a synesthetic experience that dismantles the narratives we have long believed, creating a fissure through which new historical perspectives and sensory worlds may emerge.
