Choi Byeongseok

About
Choi Byeongseok is a three-dimensional artist born in Daegu in 1981 and currently based in Seoul. His work articulates the experiences and thoughts of everyday life within a three-dimensional language. A variety of carefully finished parts come together in intricate configurations, yet it is difficult to tell what purpose or function they may have, not to mention whether or not they even constitute a product with any utility or significance. The resources used in Choi’s work—which include machine scraps, leftover industrial materials, and wood—do at times remain true to their original function, but at others, they are furnished with an entirely different role after passing through the hands of the artist. Such processes may birth pieces imbued with poetic metaphor or usher in grandiose and complex objets d’art devoid of function. Choi believes in pinpointing his attention on the act of creation rather than the creation of narrative, with narrative being understood as the natural offshoot of the creative act. As such, Choi’s life and art interlock and operate much like fine-tuned machinery.
