About
I explore the border zones where the urban and non-urban, the center and the periphery meet—spaces that feel both familiar and strange. Through photography, installation, and video, I observe these landscapes with close attention, focusing on the subtle traces of Korean everyday life. I am
particularly interested in remnants of folk beliefs, ritualistic symbols, and handmade objects imbued with people’s faith—things that often pass unnoticed. These elements, often found on the outskirts of cities or in places of transition, leave a deep visual and psychological impression even as they fade away. Through them, I seek to read the symbolic structures and cultural residues embedded in the collective unconscious of Korean society.

In my early work, I examined how masculinity in Korean society takes on distorted forms, exploring the intersection between personal experience and social context through photography. After Boy, Be Ambitious(2007–2009), my focus shifted toward peripheral urban landscapes transformed by the abstract yet powerful logic of “development.” In works such as Empty Rooms(2014–2019), I documented living spaces and communities gradually pushed aside and marginalized by urban change, reflecting on the boundaries between space, power, and existence. More recently, in Stone Market(2019–2023), I have turned my gaze toward the past, investigating how ancient shamanistic beliefs and
folk symbols persist in contemporary society and what meanings they continue to hold today.
