Leeje

About
Leeje (b. 1979) graduated from the Department of Painting at Kookmin University in 2002 and completed her master's degree at the same university in 2004. Her first solo exhibition followed shortly in 2005. Initially, her artwork focused on the urban exteriors of the new millennium, but it has since evolved to encompass abstract landscapes that reveal the obscured facets of society and human psychology. Leeje utilizes a diverse array of painting techniques and styles to capture the era in flux, exploring themes such as local identity, gender, the idiosyncratic nature of Korean capitalism, and social calamities.

Her art, marked by heterogeneity of technique, the embrace of chance, and thematic ambivalence, embodies the indeterminate essence of life and the fluidity of time. Her ambiguous painting images also represent her intention to construct various independent spacetimes, a departure from the ever-expanding nature of the contemporary world. In addition to her artistic practice, Leeje has been running Hapjungjigu, a non-profit exhibition space, since 2015.
