Eunbum Lee

About
Eunbum Lee has carved out a place for himself as one of the country&s leading potters striving to forge a new tradition on the foundation of the earthenware and ceramics of old. He leans on time-honored celadon as he creates his own take on this particular form. Whereas many Korean potters center their attention on buncheong and its distinctive set of free-spirited and painting-adjacent techniques or on white porcelain and its dignity and purity, Lee practices the spirit of creating the new on the basis of the old (beopgochangsin) with a focus on exquisite jade-green celadon ware that evokes a stretch of bamboo forest and holds within it the clearest of skies. Lee ventures beyond the mere reproduction of celadon hues. He places emphasis on keeping the earthenware and ceramics of old near and studying them frequently throughout his work, his purpose behind doing so being to interpret and create anew their formations, proportions, colors, and techniques. This constitutes a rendition of self-discipline as well as a commitment of the mind toward casting new constructions of celadon which represent the culture and aesthetics of our times by replicating the celadon that came before while simultaneously habituating ourselves to and further developing the techniques and artistic styles of our ancestors. Lee&s work constitutes a sustained inquiry into and experimentation with the nature of the celadon of old and what it ought to become today, significant in its advancement of the contemporary Korean ceramics field&s quest to modernize the traditions of earthenware and ceramic art.
