About
Lee Seunghyun (b. 1974) is an artist who investigates the very process by which images are generated. His work stems from the perspective that "drawings grow autonomously through the artist." The artist is both creator and mediator simultaneously.
Lee's drawings unfold as delicate lines overlap and proliferate. Fine lines create amorphous forms, yet the artist does not define their identity but allows them to transform themselves. The surface forms an organic structure, with lines creating rhythms like breathing.
The artist focuses on the moment of image generation—the fleeting instant before naming occurs. He surrenders to intuition, waiting for forms to emerge. His lines translate the multilayered images of subjects or express sensations through automatic writing techniques. Language and sensation collide with visual images, creating surrealistic variations.
Surfaces are in constant generation, choosing process over form and flow over meaning. His practice of opening the subtle gaps between image and object and sublimating them into new expressions asks what an image is.
Lee graduated from Seoul National University of Science and Technology, Department of Fine Arts, and completed his MFA at the same institution. Since 2004, he has held 10 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions, garnering attention for his distinctive drawing practice. He was selected as Artist of the Year at the 30th JoongAng Fine Arts Prize and received the Excellence Award at the 8th Songeun Art Award. He has participated in residency programs at Seoul Art Space Nanji, National Studio Goyang, and Incheon Art Platform. His works are in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Art Bank and other major institutions.
