Soyo Lee

About
Soyo Lee is an artist who focuses on the cultural history of human and nonhuman interactions. Her works deal with case studies of ecological niches in environments disturbed by anthropogenic activities. Her main creative processes are fieldwork and hands-on material experiments. Born in Seoul in 1976, she graduated from Yonsei University and the Korea National University of Arts and received a doctorate in 2013 from the Department of Arts at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with interdisciplinary art-science research on the conservational of historical natural history specimens. She was resident at MMCA Residency Changdong (2021), the SeMA Nanji Residency Creation Studio (2020), and NTU CCA Residencies (2018~9). Her representative solo exhibitions include Jasan-ur-bo, a Pictureless Natural History (Seodaemun Museum of Natural History, 2022), Heuksan, Dark and Scary (Mihakgwan, 2021), and A Dying Art (Art Space Hue, 2016). She participated in diverse group exhibitions, such as The 3rd Jeju Biennale: Flowing Moon, Embracing Land (Jeju Museum of Art, 2022-23), and The 1st Gangneung International Art Festival (GIAF): Tale of a City (Daechumoo Fine Art, 2022), The Pearl Diver (Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, 2021), and Ecological Sense (Nam June Paik Art Center, 2019). She curated An Illustrated Books of Plants: The Flora and its Poetic Evidences (MMCA, 2016-17).
