Lee Sungkyung

About
Lee Sungkyung explores the subtle boundaries between light and shadow, reality and reflection, and what is seen and not seen. She creates what she calls “shadow landscapes,” where shadows are not symbols of darkness or loss but spaces where light, emotion, order, and disorder come together. Reflections on glass buildings, shapes fading on the road, the edge between water lilies and light, or raindrops caught in a screen all show moments that exist between states and resist clear definition.
In her process, Lee brings in her slightly blurred, astigmatic way of seeing. She draws, erases, and redraws to build layers of time. The way hanji absorbs and pushes away ink creates a quiet paradox: the unpainted areas begin to feel present, while the painted parts seem to hold a trace of absence. This forms a visual space where light and darkness seem to shift places. Through these soft boundaries and brief moments of obscured vision, she captures how a landscape can call up memories and then release them again. She hopes these uncertain scenes open into the viewer’s own feelings and experiences.
