About
Ikkibawikrrr (formed in 2020) is a visual research collective. Currently made up of members KO Gyeol, KIM Jungwon, and CHO Jieun, ikkibawikrrr explores the multifaceted links between plants and humanity, civilization and natural phenomena, and colonialism and ecology. In Korean, ikkibawi refers to a “moss-covered rock” and krrr is an onomatopoeic term representative of the sound made by a rolling object. Moss exists at the border between air and soil, adapting to the environment through the tiny bodies within it and expanding its world according to its surrounding circumstances. Researching the tropics and seaweed as well as collaborating with local farmers, ikkibawikrrr aims to apply this method of survival to the collective’s projects and approach to its work. Central to ikkibawikrrr’s practices is the significance of this moss-informed way of life itself as it becomes a part of a movement and broadens border spaces. The members of ikkibawikrrr were previously part of the collective mixrice. Primarily engaging with different forms of migration, mixrice focused on plants, community, and temporality in its later practice. These interests and discussions have carried over into ikkibawikrrr’s present work.

The collective’s major exhibitions include Documenta 15: Lumbung (Kassel, Germany), The 14th Gwangju Biennale: Soft and Weak like Water (Gwangju, South Korea), Michikusa: Walks with the Unknown (Mito City, Japan), Cosmopolis #1—Collective Intelligence (Paris, France), Korea Artist Prize 2016 (Seoul, South Korea), Sharjah Biennial 12 (Sharjah, United Arab Emirates), nnncl & mixrice (Seoul, South Korea), and The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Brisbane, Australia).
