Aedam KIM Donghyung

About
Aedam Kim Donghyung was born in Busan in 1992. He pursued a major in East Asian Painting and earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from Dankook University in 2018, followed by a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from Hongik University in 2020. Having been influenced by his father, who worked in construction from his early days, architectural elements are prominent in Kim’s works. Among these, the most representative is the texture resembling the surfaces of building walls. This texture reflects Kim's contemplation of the relationship between nature and artificiality, inspired by his observations of cracked, rusty, or peeling surfaces on buildings. Through this, he came to visually perceive the coexistence of nature and artificiality. In order to incorporate this observation into his work in a fundamental way, he focuses on the materials used in the base layer of his creations. Kim starts by applying construction materials in multiple thin layers onto the canvas to create a unique rough texture. Once this is dry, he attaches traditional Korean paper, called hanji, to the surface. For Kim, construction materials represent artificiality, while Korean paper signifies nature. He conveys the coexistence of these elements by combining these materials in his art. Furthermore, Kim’s works predominantly feature the color white. This reflects a paradox he encountered when he painted over his existing artworks with white gesso, in an attempt to start afresh during a period of creative stagnation. He realized that in order to achieve the goal of erasing or “emptying” past works, one must paradoxically complete “filling” the canvas with white. Through this experience, Kim came to define white as a color that simultaneously embodies emptying and filling. In a similar vein, his work accentuates all ambivalent relationships, such as those between nature and artificiality, and emptying and filling.
