Seoul Express

About
Seoul Express (Youjin Jeon and Minki Hong) create performances that experiment with media-based installation work and narrative. They build comprehensive images through the conjunction of formative elements, sound, and movement, positioning technology not as an apparatus but as a contemporary context. The audience here takes part in a narrative experience that they themselves must fill in and complete, thanks to Seoul Express’s use of non-narrative text, abstract movement, splintered scenes, and less rigorous way of directing. The individualized historical experiences that belong to each member of the audience exist within a particular performance on equal footing with the duo’s creative intent, thereby unveiling the potential to reorient the work toward new narrative worlds.

Seoul Express has staged multiple performances, beginning with the Unlanguaged Seoul project in 2016—which invited sound artists of different nationalities to produce their own interpretations of Seoul—and moving on to encompass Patchwork(2017), the baby theatre Song and Matter(2019), Industrial Performance(2020), and When the Cold Blows(2022). In 2018, the duo participated in the Brussels-based Q-O2 residency and showcased Neighbor Sound, while their Wooran Foundation residency of 2020 yielded the exhibition/performance/publication entitled Code for Love. In 2022, Seoul Express delivered I Walk with the Zombie, a performance that created an Unreal Engine-based gaming environment, a custom-manufactured treadmill for real-time interactions, and choreography focused on the act of ‘walking’ to delineate the inner thoughts of an individual who had become one of the undead.
