About
Nature, humanity, and meditation — I was born in a small village at the foot of Gyeryongsan Mountain in Korea. My childhood companions were the soil, trees, and the stream where I played. The vibrant colors of seasonal flowers and the shimmer of sunlight on beautiful days naturally led me to study ceramics in college.
Gyeryongsan Mountain is home to numerous traditional Buddhist temples, many of which are over a thousand years old. I was captivated by the distinct colors and solemn atmosphere of these temples and, upon graduation, I decided to become a Buddhist monk. Although it wasn’t my field of study, my artistic journey was profoundly influenced by my encounter with Buddhist art. Unlike Western paintings that emphasize the importance of light, Buddhist art, deeply rooted in Eastern philosophy, conveys meaning even in the absence of light, creating a meditative quality that resonated with me.
To this day, my focus remains on revealing the essence and inner aspects of subjects rather than capturing their ever-changing appearance depending on light. My work begins with a sense of awe and respect for all beings while in a state of Buddhist meditation. Whether it is a flower, an insect, or a human, I hold them all in equal regard, each a remarkable center of its own world. In terms of materials and methods, my art primarily utilizes natural elements such as earth pigments, stone pigments, and floral pigments, as well as silk and cotton. Nature is an inexhaustible source of energy, and by drawing from it, one can feel this energy. This is why I still strive to align my art with nature.
