PARK JUNGKEUN

About
Park Jungkeun, born in Eumseong, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea in 1978, is an artist known for his warm-hearted portrayals of the ordinary people in our everyday lives. He received his education from the Photography Department at Kyungil University, the Graduate School of Chung-Ang University, and Germany's Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Since 2012, Park has dedicated himself to exploring the histories, people, and natural landscapes of Jeju Island.

One of his notable works, Mulsum, or The Texture of the Fatal Breath, captures the life of haenyeo (female divers of South Korea), reflecting the dynamic energy embodied in these female divers who navigate life through the process of challenging and surrendering to nature at the same time. This series portrays the haenyeo's faces holding their breath beneath the wobbling surface of water, encapsulating the very pulse of their existence. This work has grown more intense and expansive through collaborations and exhibitions. One such evolution is The Sea Getting Older Faster Than The Haenyeo, which portrays the changes in the ocean environment due to the Anthropocene climate crisis, as well as the haenyeo's struggles to adapt.

Park has also presented a variety of other series, including Ipdozo, which examines the hopelessness felt by younger generations who moved to Jeju attracted by its natural beauty. Another series, Push Forward: Secretly but Fiercely, depicts the unending conflict between development and the environment alongside backlashes from nature.
