Introduction

Art and books resemble each other. Both contain expressions of our lives that reveal the depth of thought. Although the reality of everyday life puts us under pressure, we possess a sense of curiosity that makes us continuously pursue the meanings of our lives and identity. While chasing after ambiguous reasons, we often stop and think: "Where am I standing now and am I headed in the right direction?" In this moment of doubt, we need books and art. Good books and art remind us of what we have missed or forgotten and lead us to ponder over it. Art makes us break away of habitual perceptions, and books present us with phrases of wisdom that comfort us.

While art has long been referred to as the expression of inspiration, the nature of inspiration, which represents the mystery of the human spirit, remains unknown. Inspiration has been considered a form of conveyed messages from nature or from a god, but it has also been understood to have come from unconscious impulses since Freud's time. In modern times, the meanings of art have been discussed at multiple levels, which makes it all the more difficult to define as one concept. However, art has been flowing throughout the 2,000-year history of human civilization, alternating between transcending and internalizing it. This exhibition, "The Portrait of the Artist," aims to ask about the current situation of contemporary arts and to discuss art as a discipline of humanities.

It is often said that art belongs to the humanities. Like the humanities, are is a means of expressing human experiences and thought (in an artistic way, of course). Indeed, the art museums that we visit function as knowledge institutions, exactly the same as colleges of humanities. In contemporary art museums, artworks convey to us the ideas expressed in non-verbal ways and we seek to understand the meanings of the works based on the formative ways in which the works were structured. That is, it is necessary for us to step into the thought embedded in the works beginning with their visible forms. This is often a difficult and even frustrating task.

Nevertheless, we expect the meanings of art to be both hidden and visible at the same time. Of course, works of art sometimes bring changes to or have equivalent effects on those who face them. It happens more often than not, however, that we feel lost in front of the works full of delicate indications and suggestions that stem from a high intellectual culture. In order to become familiar with contemporary arts, there are often many hurdles to overcome. Nevertheless, we attain pleasure and satisfaction within the grand frame of art. We still expect art to enrich our inner world and contribute to our leading a better life and treating each other with greater dignity.

It also seems that these kinds of art and books are not generally oriented towards the familiarity of popular culture or practical purposes. Poetry and novels, from a practical point of view, have the characteristic of being useless, which is in line with the uselessness of the contemporary arts classified as "pure" art. We do not seek useful information or knowledge from poetry or novels, which are not practical writings. Rather, they portray our inner world in a very subtle way, leading us to the experience of a virtual world and inviting us to the secret space of metaphors. In the same way, contemporary arts have abandoned the "techniques" in the archaic sense of the term "techne," and have run away to the world of uselessness, crossing the fences of beauty. They have gained value, for they are useless.

The beauty that we have known throughout the ages is no longer the absolute concept of fine arts or aesthetics. Rather, since the 20th century, beauty has become something that should not be explicitly represented in art. The status of an artwork has been acquired only on the condition that it has achieved the expression of more philosophical thoughts, that is "something meaningful." Artists have been engrossed in the search for such meanings. Today, however, it is no longer about defining or eliminating something or about expressing a certain belief or ideology. In today's artistic world, which is characterized by pluralism, artists only strive to make contact with the world through their artistic acts.

On the other hand, the completion of an artwork does not fully depend on the artist. It is when the viewer evaluates the work and finds the points that he or she can relate to, that the work is completed. A work created by the artist is reborn as another form by the viewer. In an exhibition space, the viewer reinterprets the metaphorical and poetic features of artworks with his or her own imagination. In the same way, every reader differently perceives and relates to a story in a book while reading it, recalling their own unique memories and experiences. In this respect, reading books and viewing works of art in an exhibition space resemble each other. I once watched a TV interview where a young actor was asked about the kind of actor he wanted to be in the future. He answered that he hoped to be an actor like "art" so that the audience would be able to feel happy, sad, and moved to watch him act in a movie or a TV drama. What kind of art, then, did he mean? I reckon that books, paintings, and films are the same in essence. The book is a work of art in a broad sense, and here, with respect to the "art," I suppose it is something that is meant to make us laugh, cry, think about and sympathize with it, and ultimately to live a life that dances alive.

This year's special exhibition "The Bookshelf of the Artist," which was organized to celebrate the year of books, asked artists about the relationship between books and art. In contemporary arts, intelligent thinking occupies a significant part and books are directly involved in the works. There are many ways in which artists form relationships with books. Books serve as a means of exploration and as a pursuit of meanings for artists to ascribe completeness to their works. The images on the various media selected by the artists are fundamentally a representation of their cognitive power. Therefore, a work of art is an expression of the authenticity of the artist and his or her delicate gaze, and books function as a companion for the artistic acts. This exhibition was designed to give the audience a glimpse of the books that were involved in the works of seven artists - Suh Yong-sun, Lee Hye-seung, Won Seoung-won, Yo Chang-chang, Park Ji-na, Jeong Hee-seung, and No Sun-tag - and into the world of their thoughts. Their artistic world will speak to us in another distinctive way, through the mediation of these books.

The main exhibition in which these seven artists are participating is accompanied by three special theme exhibitions. This is because books are closely linked both directly and indirectly to us as well as the artists. Writers who author books, publishers who make books, and citizens who have been with books at every turn of their lives participated in these special exhibitions. The first theme exhibition "The Portrait of the Book" was curated by invited curator Lee Chang-jae, a senior designer of the Columbia University Press. The 36 books that he selected are displayed with the photographs of two photographers, No Sun-tag and Ahn Ok-hyun. In this exhibition, we meet the gaze of Lee who has cherished, designed, and created books for many years. In addition, through the works of the two photographers, who are also fond of books as is Lee, we appreciate his specially selected interesting books. The second theme exhibition is "The Book Making Room, the Reading Room" by the publisher Youlhwadang in Paju Book City. The publisher has turned away from the pursuit of commercial interests, and has instead continued to publish books on traditional cultures and arts that need to be preserved and elicit greater attention. This exhibition invites us to a space where we can discover the role and value of publishing that is not different from an art form. The third theme exhibition "The Books of My Life" is jointly held with the Goyang Aram Nuri Library, an arts specialization library. Seven Goyang civilians participated in this exhibition, introducing the books of their lives that had split the paradigms of their minds like sharp axes or soothed their hearts as gentle breezes.

We feel comfortable about the things that are universal and ordinary and have long believed that the discourses of truth and justice are grounded on a solid foundation. The way of life established over the extended course of time has created universal rules such as customs, conventions, and habits, and we live everyday lives practicing mutual courtesy, fulfilling duties, and passing moral judgments that facilitate social relations. However, recent years have shown the emergence of the viewpoint that familiar ideas often exclude individual differences and otherness and make us unconsciously position ourselves in the framework of limited thinking. According to Jean-François Lyotard, today's postmodernism is defined as distrust of and doubt about such grand discourses, or meta-narratives. In addition to this, many other philosophical considerations have led to the changes in the discourses that have justified the concepts of truth and good. Furthermore, poetry, novels, or art have encouraged us to cease such habitual moral judgments and to once again perceive the objects of these judgments as empty symbols. Contrary to the fixed and symbolized world, the artistic world that is reconstructed through imagination helps us project new perspectives to the objects of these empty symbols.

When we interact with a work of art, we do not need to be restrained by the artist's intention. It is "I" who am the subject of recognition and perception, and if "" find a part that resonates with me during the interaction with the work, the reaction comes from my experiences and my inner world. The works of art that each of us encounter resurrect our past emotions and make us look back on them. This is another important role of art, to invite us to take a close look at our feelings and our inner world. The works of the artists are also created in such a process mediated by books, which are a means of enlightenment. Books and art are friends of all of us. They keep us awake without falling asleep. Books and art shift our eyes toward our inner side, give a profound understanding of ourselves and others, and provide us with a rich imagination. Our lives are richer when accompanied by books and art.

Until the World Needs Language

"Humanity has two languages, namely two complementary languages; one that expresses human experiences by explaining them with the help of ideas and their connections, and the other that visualizes what humanity feels in a more or less ambiguous way with the help of images."

- René Huyghe, Dialogue avec le visible

If we can define all the means with which human beings can express and sense the world as "language," writing and painting have constituted a substantial part of it. The two complement each other and compete with one another, sometimes admiring and at other times opposing each other. I am neither an artist nor a professional writer, but I have been closely observing the attitudes of artists towards writing and books, as well as the viewpoints of writers and scholars towards art as an editor who has long been engaged in the publication of books on art. In the course of my career, I have met living writers in person and those who had already passed away through their manuscripts.

"For a painter, writing is just redundant." This is a well-known remark of painter Chang Uc-chin(1917-1990). Paradoxically, he also expressed his thoughts through writing and the collection of his writings, The Riverside Atelier, is still read as the valuable personal records of the painter. Useong Kim Chong-yung(1915-1982), a sculptor with keen insights into the Eastern and Western cultures, believed that artists' work should be grounded on firm theoretical and philosophical foundations, not solely in skill, and should thus study the thoughts and ideas of other artists and create a new art form based on them. Throughout his work, Kim put this belief into action. Geunwon Kim Yong-jun(1904-1967), an artist who defected from South Korea and is widely known for Geunwon's Essays(1948), was a versatile artist who had profound knowledge in literature, history, and philosophy and left a greater volume of writings than paintings. Earlier than the times of these artists, scholar-painters of the Joseon Dynasty such as Chusa Kim Jeong-hui(1786-1856) had pursued the mastery of poetry, calligraphy, and painting as a single art form. At that time, discussing writing and painting separately was considered meaningless.

Writing and painting were often crossed between by Western artists as well. The poet Jean Cocteau demonstrated his talents in various areas including drawings, stage art, and films. The architect Le Corbusier, who created a large volume of paintings and sculptures in addition to his architectural works, also compiled and designed over 30 collections of his writings personally to continuously document and analyze his architectural works. His only Korean disciple, Kim Chung-up, was also an architect and poet who dreamed of a comprehensive form of art as he interacted with his contemporary artists and writers. There was a time when artists wrote poems and created book covers for their writer friends while writers wrote about art. Such a relationship is found among many artists and writers such as Baudelaire and Delacroix, Valéry and Degas, Jean Genet and Giacometti, Lee Tae-jun and Kim Yong-jun, and Kim Kwang-seop and Kim Whan-ki. To them, a book was a fascinating medium where writing and painting were naturally intertwined. The book was a stepping stone to move to a new world by crossing between two areas beyond boundaries and performing various experiments. However, this abstract is one of the landscapes that has disappeared since the middle of the 20th century. Humans began to pursue specialization, rejecting the wholeness that they had previously sought. Art has been subdivided into painting, sculpture, crafts, design, and architecture. Writing and painting have also been separated from each other. Artists do not write anymore, and writers cannot afford to draw or paint. The same movement occurred in other fields as well. In the 21st century, there have been attempts to overcome the division and separation through the concept of "consilience," but it seems quite challenging to reconnect these perceptions, which have been segmented through institutional education.

Of course, throughout the long human history, there has existed confrontation between images and texts, which illustrates how human civilization has progressed. In the past, knowledge was mainly spread by word of mouth, which was replaced by letters after the invention of printing in the 15th century. With the invention of photography in the 19th century, images started to overwhelm texts in the pages of books, newspapers, and magazines and spread to the public. At the beginning of the 20th century, images finally took off from paper media and dominated outdoor billboards, and television screens. Today, they occupy computer monitors and smartphone screens, constantly captivating our eyes. Books and letters, apart from their value, have lost their initiative to images in terms of quantity. The great German writer Goethe often emphasized the role of images and fine arts, saying, "We speak too much. We should speak less and draw more. I want to rather abandon words and articulate only with images like beautiful natural sceneries." I wonder what he would think about today's reversed situation if he was alive.

Until the advent of the future era when all information is directly entered into the brain, we need to communicate in a language through some form of media. In the communication process, some of the messages are inevitably missing or misunderstood. It has been insisted that the author's intention should be fully expressed within a work, whether it is in writing or in a painting. There is a need for a "blank" to be left for the viewer. However, it seems that behind this blank exists the desire of the artist to cause the work to leave a mysterious impression and remain as a pure work of art. However, art is ultimately an endeavor to make evanescent things last and to transform ambiguous ideas into clearer ones. And these ideas need to ask the questions about human existence.

Communication with the reader or viewer does not occur only through a single channel. Therefore, humans need plural languages. The artists I have met throughout my work of making books generally had command of the second and third languages in addition to their first language, and were willing to steadily discover what they had not at first perceived. Our inner world cannot be fully conveyed in any single language, whether it is the form of visual art or literature. This is because that which is inexpressible is far more vast than that which is expressible. But if art is the pursuit of reaching destination that we know we cannot reach, the book is another language that accompanies the artist along that lonely journey.
