Lee, Heung-Jae

The Director in Jeonbuk Museum of Art

Almost half of a year has already passed. The terrain about Mount Moak that elicites exclamations during the feast of brilliant colorful flowers has already turned to green waves, engendering another spectacle. This season, when beautiful nature scenes conferred to humans draw our attention, Jeonbuk Museum of Art sheds light on Jeonbuk people in its fourth series addressing the theme of Jeonbuk.

Have you ever seen an old country man's heavily wrinkled face or stopped for a moment before a figure painting reflecting our restless, nervous appearance? The naive look of an old man you meet at the exhibition, A Panorama of Figures is expected to make viewers smile warmly. It is hoped this can be a time of healing and understanding others who are wounded and feel difficulty in relationships with others.

A Panorama of Figures is designed to revitalize Jeonbuk local culture. Your words of encouragement are requested for this endeavor to recreate Jeonbuk as a cultural, artistic site for communication, revitalizing the region's stagnant art culture. You are advised to have an experience of recollecting bygone days and enjoy a moment's introspection at the museum.

I am deeply grateful to the artists who presented their stellar artworks, created with verve, and the Gangam Calligraphy Museum for invaluable works kindly loaned for the show. I also give my thanks to many for providing help in many ways.

A Panorama of Figures, Meet Self-portraits of Us All

Lee, Sun-hwa

Curator of Jeonbuk Museum of Art

A Panorama of Figures is an exhibition inquiring into the diverse symbolic connotations of figures. Artists have long been inspired by and closely bound up with the subject matter of figures. The main model for Gustave Courbet was the peasant, for Frida Kahlo it was her feeble body, and for Amedeo Modigliani it was Jeanne Hebuterne. In terms of art history the figure has worked as window for reading an artist's psychology and his times, and realistic representation. For the exhibition the museum has used four themes and chosen works reflecting these to draw out diverse, in-depth discussions on figures. The four themes are Faces of remembrance, Social landscape, Existence and self, and Jeonbuk people-our faces. With this the museum intends to present a time for meditation on numerous specified and unspecified persons passing or facing us, such as mothers symbolic of the warm heart, farmers with a warm impression, and Jeonbuk's historical celebrities.

Faces of remembrance, In the name of family

This section, Faces of remembrance is composed of works arousing nostalgia for childhood and recalling dim memories related to a specific person. One of the figures we can choose as one of the best in our memories is the mother of our times. Another object is the family the mother gave birth to. In this section, objects are showcased as a source extracting universal viewer emotion, going beyond representations of the figure as an aesthetic object and the realm of portrait as documentation. For this, this section is intended to minimize the distance between objects like mother and family and viewers, and offer time to maximize an emotional function through communion and communication.

Yun Suknam, a godmother of Korean feminist art, displays Fish Market for the first time. A mother with an oversized fish on her head places one hand on the earth and grabs the fish on her head with the other. Eye-catching in this scene is her fully stretched arms. This object's gesture exudes a plaintive emotion propping up the weight of life. In Duck Yong Kim's Mother and Milk Vetch gentleness aroused from his main materials, wood and mother-of-pearl, and his peculiar analog emotion are sensed. Shin Hasoon's Morning Walk and Spring Outing affectionately show warm yet trivial daily scenes of a family.

Jung Sun Kim presents painting anchored to people about the artist and her actual family photographs. Kim also arouses sympathy from concentrating on objects derived from her personal experience that most people universally feel and reminisce with. Hwan-Kwon Yi joins the section with Jangdokdae, an installation work. The accounts for the purpose of this work are that jangdokdae has many different sizes of sauce jars that gather together to recollect the family going through winter together. Choosing jangdokdae as the medium to arouse nostalgia for the family, Yi associates it with a family scene of three generations, grandparents, parents, and children.

Social landscape, the new face of rapidly changing times

This section, Social landscape showcases realistic aspects of the times with the keyword of 'figure,' moving beyond conventional documentation of reality. The section intends to capture diverse, interesting points of specific persons as codes for change in a turbulent era, trying to showcase changing aspects of the times.

Photographic artist Hein-kuhn Oh displays four pieces of his Cosmetic Girls series. Teenage girls cast on the streets pose before the camera after demonstrating diverse make-ups. Oh shows new discourse about the obiect of the girl as an immature member of society has degenerated to 'subject and object of desire'. His work provides viewers with an opportunity to ask what we feel in the imitation of adults by the girls who are excessively exposed to the mass media. Oksun Kim displays photographs featuring daily life of international marriage couples. Kim's photographing of inter-racial couples was inspired by her personal experience of international marriage. The artist takes photographs of their lives overcoming difference in culture and mores, language and thought in their real residential space, thereby adding zest to the scenes.

Sunny Kim, who immigrated to the United States at school, addresses the subject matter of school uniforms for her work. For the artist who has to experience 'relative life of the other,' the school uniform is the symbol representing her social status that Korean society has given to her. Kim raises a question on her identity and recollects the meaning of her presence through the school uniform, taking notice of change in the environment of the times. Changwon Lee who works on collective portraits of blurred figures creates foreign celebrities childhood images found through the Internet and missing persons images searched with the word 'missing', in mosaics or patterns. We may check new social issues our times face through such expressive method of figures.

Existence and self, contemporary people's anguish

This section, Existence and self is an exploration of underlying and primal human instinct and identity. In this section works of Suh Yongsun, Sungsoo Kim, Huh Yun-hee, Jungwook Kim, and Hyeongkyeong You represent existential anguish of life, human solitude and isolation, and oppressed human existence. Their sensuous expression of colors associated with human psychology draws attention here.

Artist Suh Yongsun narrates human instinct and existence through the existence of urbanites and heartless scenes of reality, displaying Those in a City, Donam-dong-Crossing, and In the City. His indigenous expressivity and primary color sensation in a large canvas evokes a strong impact. Sungsoo Kim represents aspects of human deficiency and solitude through a figure with a vacant look, aggravating gloomy emotion with his trademark fluorescent-color expression. In charcoal works such as Becoming the Bird, Breath, and Moonlit Night Huh Yun-hee represents her will for freedom, complex emotions like loneliness and solitude. Jeonbuk people, our faces, painting all our self-portraits

The exhibition A Panorama of Figures presents comprehensive views of figures and produces cultural discourse based on the locality of Jeonbuk people. The art show is intended to underscore the point that we live in the era of globalization while reviving local features in the name of 'glocal' - combining 'global' and 'local' - moving beyond a dispersed perspective of global and local.

Jeonbuk Museum of Art has constantly presented many exhibitions to revitalize Jeonbuk's local art, such as History, Culture, and Imagination Flowing with Jeonbuk Rivers (2010), Meet Jeonbuk-Jeonbuk Fields, Mud Flats, and People (2011), and Jeonbuk Mountains (2012). The exhibition A Panorama of Figures has the purpose to explore Jeonbuk's local cultural topography and pursue bilateral exchange as part of such Jeonbuk art projects. A region can be the place to raise intriguing discussions in that any limited or specific subject can be developed here within the power structure of art culture. It is also expected the exhibition's subject 'figures' will engage Jeonbuk people to bring forth diverse humanistic, sociological storytelling in this respect.

In the section, Jeonbuk people, our faces arranged in Gallery 3 and Gallery 5 involve recent pieces of 19 Jeonbuk artists, including Sun-doo Kim, and mioon, conveying a variety of narratives. In Gallery 3 are four Jeonbuk photographers, Nyung-man Kim, Sang-jo Oh, Cheol-kyun Shin, and Chun-sik Kim displaying figures in country scenes. Artist Nyung-man Kim showcases ordinary people's daily aspects he met in Gochang, Buan, and Sunchang, Jeonbuk Province in black-and-white photographs. Nostalgia for bygone days is felt in children carrying a bookwrapper, a mother feeding a baby, and an old man's face revealing traces of time.

Artist Sang-jo Oh displays the series Figure Commemorative Photographs he took mainly in Jangsu in the 1970s and 1980s. This series consisting of photographs featuring family members who gathered on holidays or at rituals for the four ceremonial occasions coming of age, wedding, funeral, and ancestral rites, reflect life-aspects of the times. Cheol-kyun Shin who went aggressively into action in the 1960s draws attention mainly with photographs capturing children's innocent looks. The naive, innocent faces of the children Shin chooses as subiects remind viewers of lyric emotion and dim memories. Artist Chun-sik Kim takes notice of agricultural life, realization of its reality, and peasants' hard daily life, displaying figures he photographed in Gemma and Jangsu, Jeonbuk.

Gallery 5 shows an extension of the section, Jeonbuk people, our faces, introducing works related to Jeonbuk people not only by Jeonbuk artists but also by artists from other regions. Oriental painter Kim Sun-doo presents his new pieces Line-Kim Hyeong-yeong and Line-Noh Si-jung featuring poet Kim Hyeong-yeong, a native of Buan, Jeonbuk and one of his acquaintances from Samrye. Video artist group moon produced the new Aside of Audience-Being Character for this exhibition by interviewing the students of two schools in the Jeonbuk area (Namsung Middle School in Iksan, Banwoul Elementary School in Jeonju). In this work, videotaped in May this year, moon asks a question concerning the mentor fever, a present hot issue for students. In this interesting video work the 40 student interviewees execute role-plays regarding themselves as the mentors the students are influenced by, or who they aspire to become.

The work tendency of other Jeonbuk artists is classified into three categories, Jeonbuk people's daily aspects, Jeonbuk people in old country scenes, and Jeonbuk people in history, through which 15 participating artists showcase diverse aspects of Jeonbuk people. Artists like Gi-joon Yoo, Yeon-suk Chae, Jung-su Kim, Gi-jong Yoo, Un-taek Lim, and Ji-hyun Kim display works revealing Jeonbuk people's everyday aspects. In Woman Doing a Painting Gi-joon Yoo presents a figure painting in which delicate renditions stand out. Yeon-suk Chae and Jung-su Kim display Daily Rhythms and Bus-the Others that represent a figures' vacant looks in a bus and contemporary people's emptiness, respectively.

Photographer Gi-jong Yoo symbolically represents eternal beauty dwelling in an old woman's neat figure through a juxtaposition of an aged woman and two blooming flowers. Un-taek Lim presents Untitled, a work portraying a group of persons through an elaborate knife-carving on jangji paper, evoking a light and shade effect. Ji-hyun Kim lyrically depicts the back of a mother sitting on a wooden floor, providing viewers with an opportunity to reminisce on a dim past or recollect their mother's devotion and love through a mother's vacant gaze into the air. Artist Jong-man Lee who has intensively explored nature's vivid life force on canvas draws our attention with a charcoal work depicting his self-portrait in conspicuous rough brushwork.

Ji-yeon Kim, Hong-kyu Park, Chang-yun Jin, and Jeong-suk Jin show interesting aspects of figures from the country areas of Jeonbuk. Photographer Ji-yeon Kim has constantly executed several series featuring rice mills, barber shops, and places of disappearing memories. The artist displays part of the series I go to a barber shop in this exhibition. Kim demonstrates her will to generate another history and culture by keeping a diary of old memories related to the barber shop.

Peasant painter Hong-kyu Park mentions "Work of depicting farmers in painting must be heartbreaking and painful." The artist demonstrates his strong will to leave our parents generation's warmhearted sentiment for home and hometown scenes as legacies, consistently exploring rural scenes such as red clay fields and country roads. In Drinking at Midday, Chang-yun Jin, President of the Korean People's Artists Association of Jeonbuk portrays realistic facial expressions of aged women he met in Samrye, Jeonbuk Province. The artist brings about local emotion with the reddish faces of old drunken women at midday and the green earth in the foreground. Jeong-suk Jin photographs people who live in Seonje-ri, Okgu-eup, Gunsan-si, reminding viewers of the present and past.

Sen Chung, Nyung-man Kim, Jung-hee Yeon, and Seung-hoon Lee portray Jeonbuk people of history. Jeonju native Sen Chung presently lives in Dusseldorf, Germany and actively works at home and abroad. Sen Chung joins the exhibition with verve, sending his new paintings featuring Manjeong Kim So-hee, and Gukchang Jeong Jeong-yeol. Photographer Kim Nyung-man displays Seokjeon Hwang Wook's portrait photograph taken in Jeonju in 1987 and a photograph showing Hwang's peculiar brush technique holding the brush with his palm. Hwang Wook Portrait, Hwang's outstanding image by artist Jung-hee Yeon is also exhibited. A black-and-white portrait photograph of Gangam Song Seong-yong, a representative calligrapher from Gimje is also made public. This photograph suggestive of scholarly fidelity is a work housed in the Gangam Calligraphy Museum. In closing, artist Seung-hoon Lee presents his new Oriental painting featuring Garam Byeong-gi Lee a poet of sijo, or traditional three-verse Korean poem and scholar of Korean literature.

This is an age when numerous anonymous people are correlated through SNS but we wonder what locality really is. A local area was previously defined as a concept of the other relative to the center, or the subject, or a space somewhat lagged and alienated. In our art culture, locality, a topic for discussion may be thought of, not as a limited closed' physical space but as a specific space to bring possibility from an open perspective.

Culture and art has to grow in connection with economical, political, and social codes. Although decentralization is rapid ongoing, local culture and art is still in a relatively poor condition. I'd like to underline that the era when we need a new concern for locality has come. I hope this exhibition will be a small yet solid foundation for the possibilities of dynamic locality and new perspective, transcending the limited concept of locality.
