Koo Bohnchang - Artist Introduction

Known as a “pioneer of Korean contemporary photography,” Koo Bohnchang (具本昌, b. 1953) is an unparalleled photographer who has led the transformation and growth of Korean photography and contemporary art while pursuing diverse themes and aesthetic consciousness and his own photographic aesthetics. Born in Seoul in 1953, he began taking photographs in high school and formally studied photography at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (Fotodesign, Fachhochschule, Hamburg) in Germany in 1980. During his career spanning over 45 years as of 2025, he has expanded the new possibilities and expressive territories of photography while producing diverse and vast amounts of work.

Koo Bohnchang’s early photographs during his studies in Germany expressed his inner consciousness in a sensuous and surrealistic manner, exploring the self and existence. With his introverted temperament, he channeled emotionssuch as the alienation he experienced as a foreigner in Germany, the loneliness and wandering of his youth, and the grief from his mother’s deaththrough photography while seeking his identity. When he returned from Germany in 1985, his photographic capabilities were demonstrated through radical and experimental photographs that were unprecedented in Korean photography at the time. Various anti-photographic media and original formal experiments, including film scratching and overlapping, print cutting, sewing, and burning, as well as montage, collage, photogram, and toning, coined the new term “making photo” and caused a sensation in the then-dominant field of straight photography.

However, following his father’s death in 1996, Koo expanded his perspective to the essence of life and living beings based on philosophical contemplation of life, death, and time. Based on insights into finite human existence, he turned to more fundamental subjectswater, fire, air, and earth that constitute the universe, the cycles of nature’s generation and extinction, and the traces of objects that have fulfilled their purposepursuing minimal and poetic straight photography. After presenting Masks in 1998, he explored the beauty and spiritual values of traditional arts and artifacts such as masks, white porcelain, soapstone, paper flowers, small tables (soban), and gold crowns, as well as traditional spaces and historic sites like Tongdosa Temple, Soswaewon Garden, and palaces. He reinterpreted traditional Korean culture with modern sensibility through simple forms, planar composition, contemplative vision, aesthetic imagery, and the aesthetics of empty space, revealing the essence of Korean emotion and beauty.

In this process, Koo’s photographic activities extended across all fields of photographyfrom art to commercial photography, exhibition planning, art management, and education. Besides art photography, he demonstrated exceptional ability in performance posters, fashion photography, advertising photography, film still photography, and editorial photography. In particular, since planning The New Wave of Photography (1988), which became a watershed moment for Korean contemporary photography and new photographic culture, he has planned numerous domestic and international group exhibitions, including FotoFest 2000, Contemporary Korean Photographers: the New Generation (2000). He subsequently served as the chief curator of Daegu Photo Biennale 2008 and as the curator of the 4th Biennial exhibition of world image: Photoquai 2013 and Les Rencontres d’Arles Photographie 2014. Through this process, Koo Bohnchang widely promoted the vitality of Korean photography abroad and secured channels for international exchange. He also pioneered the Korean photography market by operating the photography-specialized art shop “WorkShop 9” from 1998 and devoted himself to nurturing younger generations as a lecturer at Chung-Ang University and professor at Kaywon University of Art & Design and Kyungil University.

Furthermore, Koo collaborated with figures from various cultural and artistic fields beyond photography, including literature and art, demonstrating his cultural creativity and practical versatility. He published poetry collections, novels, and essay collections featuring his photographs alongside writers such as Kwak Jae-gu, Kim Kyung-mi, Kim Yong-taek, Kim Hwa-young, Shin Kyung-sook, Lee Cheong-jun, and Choi In-ho. He also published photobooks including The Sea of Thought (1992), Portraits of Time (2004), DMZ (2014), Soap (2021), and KOREA; In the 1980's (2022). He published art books from various publishers: Art Vivant 25: Bohn-chang Koo (Sigongsa, 1994), Youlhwadang Photography Collection 20: Koo Bohn chang (Youlhwadang, 2004), Vessels for the Heart (Hangil Art, 2006), Revealed Personas (2006), and Deep Breath in Silence (2006).

Therefore, Koo Bohnchang gained recognition and drew significant attention not only from the Korean photography and art communities but also from the general public and overseas photographers. From his experimentation ahead of his time to his aesthetic vision that captured quintessentially Korean images, his artistic world became a preferred subject of criticism for domestic and international art critics, including Kang Su-mi, Park Young-taek, Yun Kyu-hong, Lee Kyung-sung, Lee Joo-heon, Jeon Young-baek, Choi Geon-su, Choi Beom, Vicki Goldberg, John McDonald, and Iizawa Kotaro (飯澤耕太郞).

Recently, he has participated not only in major domestic solo exhibitions such as Koo Bohnchang’s Voyages (2023) and THE LOOK OF THINGS (2024) but also in many overseas exhibitions, including the German exhibition Bohn-Chang Koo-Fotoausstellung (1984), the Japanese exhibition Tokyo International Photo-Biennale (1999), the American exhibition Bohnchang Koo Vessels (2006), the Chinese exhibition Jimei×Arles International Photography Festival (2018), and the French exhibition Koo Bohnchang: Self-Portrait (2023). Along with exhibitions, he published photobooks including the Japanese editions Hysteric Nine (2003), 白磁 (2007), and the English edition Fotofest 2000, highlighting his distinguished international career. As a result, his works are permanently collected by major domestic and international museums, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art; Musée Guimet; the British Museum; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Kahitsukan, Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Thus, while working with photography as his medium, Koo Bohnchang has developed a brilliant artistic trajectory as an artist representing Korean contemporary art. He has made a mark in Korean photography history not only as a capable photographer but also as a photography educator who spread horizontal educational culture, an exhibition planner who internationalized Korean photography by promoting Korean contemporary photographers worldwide, and an art manager who commercialized photographic works while leading and representing contemporary art. In recognition of his contributions to enhancing the qualitative level and international status of Korean photographic art, he received the Republic of Korea Culture and Arts Award (2015), Seoul Culture Today Cultural Awards Special Grand Prize (2024), and Samsung Ho-Am Prize (2025). Koo’s pioneering experimental spirit and zeitgeist, which transcended form and genre, not only newly defined photographic aesthetics and elevated the status of his artistic world but also greatly contributed to expanding the horizons of Korean photography and enriching contemporary art.

Koo Bohnchang’s Photography and the New Yet Timeless Perspective of Contemporary Art

Park Juseok

-Research Director of Koo Bohnchang Digital Archiving Project

-Professor at Myongji University

1. Koo Bohnchang’s Position in Korean Photography and Contemporary Art

Koo Bohnchang (具本昌, b. 1953) is an artist who has pioneered new directions in Korean contemporary photography and has long been a driving force in contemporary art. This achievement is based on his ability to draw audience empathy through new forms of work and appropriate formats whenever he presents issues he wishes to address to the world through his art. He began studying photography in earnest at the Fachschule für Gestaltung in Hamburg, Germany, in 1980, started his career as a photographer in the early 1980s, and has now reached over 45 years of photographic experience. Koo’s photographs, presented through numerous exhibitions and publications, have developed in remarkably diverse ways in subject matter and expressive formats.

Nevertheless, the foundation of Koo’s work maintains consistency in his stubborn pursuit of an experimental spirit, believing in and adhering to his own sensibility and his sensibility-first approach. Coinciding with Korea’s modernization period, when members of Korean society developed self-centered ways of thinking that prioritize their own existence, Koo’s sensibility-centered work succeeded in drawing broad public empathy. In particular, since planning and executing The New Wave of Photography exhibition in 1988, Koo has led the transformation and growth of Korean photography, becoming the most influential photographer in Korean society through his diverse photographic worlds and endeavors, and establishing his reputation as an artist who elevates the status of Korean photography on the world stage.

2. Koo Bohnchang’s Experimental Spirit and Photographic Language

“I have always been interested in the uncertain future that cannot be known and in life that cannot defy fate. How many choices do we have to make in our lives? Also, how amazing it is that the many coincidental events we encounter create our future destiny.”

This was what photographer Koo Bohnchang wrote in his artist’s note for his solo exhibition held at Isis Gallery in Kyoto, Japan, in October 1995. It sounds like a monologue revealing the foundation of his work. It is also a statement that allows us to glimpse Koo’s experimental spirit and photographic language. Through the photographs he has published so far, Koo has shown a completely new photographic language and visual vocabulary that could not be found in the works of existing photographers or artists. As a result, his work appeared quite reckless and even destructive to conservative photographers who adhered to traditional photographic language and audiences accustomed to their work.

Nevertheless, since the mid-1980s, Koo has steadily held solo exhibitions in both small and large galleries, demonstrating his experimental spirit. Although he remained outside the mainstream of Korean photography, these quietly continued exhibitions began to create significant reverberations in Korean photography and the broader cultural and arts community, and even internationally. The beginning was with works such as Twelve Deep Sighs in 1985, One Minute Monologue in 1987, Clandestine Pursuit in the Long Afternoon in 1988, and The Sea of Thoughts in 1990. The themes and formats of these photographs were unprecedented experimental photographs in Korean photography and radical attempts. These were works that “employed comprehensive techniques, including collage and montage, photograms, various objects, emulsion scratching, not to mention means for visualizing individual images, and combining and juxtaposing multiple photographs, even using sewing to compose the overall image.” He viewed photography not as photography but as one means for artistic expression, which was an attitude that emphasized expression itself.

Koo Bohnchang’s various experimentalism emerged from the process of finding ways to express the universal human experience of “thinking about and experiencing death while simultaneously clinging to life and hope” and finding ways to optimize this within given environments. Regarding the process of conceiving his representative work, the In the Beginning series, completed and presented in 1995, he explained: “Initially, I tried to print the work on a single large photographic paper, but such paper was not available in Korea. So, the idea of sewing came to mind. Since my father was in the textile business, I was familiar with sewing, and most importantly, I thought that the threads complexly entangled on the photographic paper surface symbolically expressed the complex fate of humans.” This was a representative case showing the artist’s attitude of acknowledging the physical limitations he faced while positively overcoming those limitations to create entirely new forms.

3. Koo Bohnchang’s Photography Way of Viewing Subjects and Objects

Since beginning his career as a photographer in the early 1980s, the subjects that Koo Bohnchang has held onto or been held by are objects destined to vanish naturally or be discarded and vanish when they deviate from their human-defined purposes. His photography is an expression of compassion and empathy toward all things that perish in this way. As Koo has mentioned in many media interviews, this is an obsession stemming from the sense of alienation from the mainstream that he experienced in childhood. Even everyday objects that are so familiar to us but that we consider trivial acquire different meanings when they pass through the mechanism of Koo’s sensibility, which views them with compassion. This means they speak confidently as the protagonists of photographs.

The power that dominates the atmosphere of Koo’s photographs and the secret hidden within his works can be called “compassion in solitude.” The photographs he has presented through numerous exhibitions and publications so far have developed remarkably diversely in terms of subject matter and expressive formats. However, the underlying current is a sense of compassion for things cast off from life’s order of survival and destined to disappear. Compassion is revealed in the process of identifying or homogenizing the self with such subjects, and this is ultimately a product of the loneliness felt when one feels alienated from the universal order of life. Koo’s photography is, therefore, “compassion in solitude.”

Koo applies very diverse methods in lighting, tone, and frame composition when taking portraits of objects. However, viewers share quite consistent feelings throughout his photographs. This is because the process of Koo treating, viewing, and framing objects as subjects occurs within his sensibility. When objects appear on the surface of his works, they are transferred as elements of the world inherent to the artist, completely unrelated to the primordial meaning of existence they originally possessed. Objects that confidently make sounds in other people’s works become supporting characters, and objects that were treated as trivial become masters of the screen. This process of order subversion is Koo’s photography. The confusion or pleasure that viewers experience when viewing Koo’s photographs is, therefore, natural.

All objects surrounding humans, when viewed from an existential dimension, have two inevitable destinies. One is a way of existing as objects themselves, having self-identity as elements within the vast order of objects. The creation and extinction of objects occur naturally within that order and have formed some system over a long history. The other is the destiny bestowed by humans, arising from their existence on this earth. In fact, all objects function for us as sign systems or meanings, partly because of the properties that objects themselves possess, but more because of phenomena that arise because we grasp the properties and order of objects and use them according to our intentions.

The Breath series, published in 1995, includes photographs taken while experiencing his father’s painful breathing and death just before his father passed away. This was a work that reduced his experience of his father’s death to a philosophical interpretation of death as a universal human problem. The year 1995, when the Breath series was published, was at the end of the 20th century. He sensed the fin de siècle atmosphere himself, and in addition to this, he was conscious of his father, who appeared in the photographs, breathing his last rapid breaths as he headed toward death. The artist’s role is to sublimate individual or collective experiences into works that draw audience empathy while simultaneously creating reflective time. For Koo, photography was an important medium that allowed him to fulfill such an artist’s role.

Moreover, Koo’s photography is characterized by subjects that, to the ordinary eyes, appear to be nothing more than everyday things. Walls with torn posters, garbage trucks in back alleys, hands leaning against windows, and street pavements with some pools of waterthese are all commonplace sights that usually escape attention, things on the verge of disappearing under the weight of an uncertain future and the inevitability of fate. However, the single flow running through them was the expression of compassion and empathy for things that are discarded from the order of life, deviating from it and fading into disappearance.

The subjects that appeared in Koo’s Flow series presented at “Won Gallery” in Seoul in 1999earth, water, and woodwere also very common and ordinary objects, naturally part of our surrounding environment. They were objects that had always existed and been seen, so we had carelessly overlooked them and, therefore, subjects that would never seem fresh, no matter when we looked at them. Because they were not special, they were subjects that had little visual appeal.

Figure 5. Flow-Ocean 05-1, Gelatin Silver Print, 1999

Figure 6.. Flow-Tree 01, Gelatin Silver Print, 1999

However, for Koo, the Flow series arose from memories and a longing for nature as an integrated whole, where each element exists in harmony, and from reverence for its power or beauty. Koo Bohnchang praised moments of life reviving through the breath of great nature, which is a mimetic existence. Although the overall atmosphere of photographs using earth, water, and wood as subjects appeared to be in a very static state, he was able to capture the subtle energy of germination even in stillness with an attitude of contemplative immersion (Versenkung). He was able to create masterpieces where the intensity and loneliness of life and thought seeped out in streams from cleanly refined images.

Even such extraordinarily ordinary subjects acquire new meanings when they pass through Koo’s delicate and refined eyes. However, he does not deliberately exaggerate or distort objects for his intentions. Koo gives aesthetic value to subjects through either close-up shots or thorough isolation from their surroundings. This is where the characteristics of Koo’s photography are discovered. In this way, the “cynical objectivity of objects” that Koo pursues becomes much more clearly visible than photographs that overtly emphasize objectivity. This is precisely the typical photographic language that Koo enjoys using. It is a concept completely opposite to traditional photographic language.

Figure 8. Group of Soaps 01, Archival Pigment Print, 158.78×98.73cm, 2009

Furthermore, if we carefully examine the frames in the works that Koo has shown over 45 years, we can find another distinctive photographic language that allows us to clearly feel Koo. That is Koo’s favorite use of photographic juxtaposition and combination. We sometimes experience cases where things that have no meaning when separated combine and form relationships to exert unexpected power. Koo’s works sometimes become works as single photographs, but sometimes, multiple photographs combine to create one work. The juxtaposition and combination of photographs was a very interesting photographic language chosen by Koo in the process of giving new object order, and this was also a method of new visual language that was rarely found in existing photographers’ or artists’ works.

4. The Historical Significance of Koo Bohnchang’s Photography

Koo Bohnchang is a photographer who embodies the achievements of modern visual theory through extremely instinctive sensibility. His photography, though not always, mostly undergoes very experimental formal manipulation processes. He not only diversely selects film, photographic paper, printing techniques, and frames but also utilizes the latest computer image manipulation functions. Therefore, his work transcends the medium of photography to combine with art or guides viewers to have new visual experiences in the process of emphasizing the characteristics of the photographic medium itself.

However, Koo’s success as an avant-garde of Korean photography was because manipulation was not merely formal play for him but a profound process for constructing a multilayered semantic network in photography. Moreover, it was a field of addition that sought to expand the meaning of photography and the objects it depicts, as well as a form of meaning-giving. Usually, hasty manipulation of photography and photographic subjects easily ends up as individual deviation or image play. However, Koo’s photographic work, based on unique thinking and sensibility, broadened the field of discussion about photography itself and, furthermore, provided opportunities to reconsider our concepts about the world.

Therefore, the significance of Koo’s success in the history of Korean photography lies in demonstrating that even constructive works can acquire aesthetic and historical value through formal experiments with media only when they have sufficiently fulfilled their role as single photographic images. In other words, Koo sublimated photographers’ emotions, sentiments, and worldviews into works by connecting personal and collective experiences in a weblike complex manner. As a result, his photography both drew audience empathy and provided reflective time.

Of course, it is not easy to accurately grasp the meaning contained in Koo’s photography. Nevertheless, one clear fact is that when viewed in the flow of our photographic history, Koo’s work provided new photographic forms and discourse, enabling Korean photography to greatly transcend existing frameworks. Through Koo, who has both quietly broken tradition with his own language and drawn his own forms and discourse based on traditional subjects, our photography world has developed very rich discussions. It is an undeniable, clear fact that the status of photography in our culture has been elevated to a higher status thanks to his photography, which contains the photographer’s way of seeing inherent in the photographed objects. For Koo Bohnchang, photography was the optimal and supreme medium that allowed him to pioneer new yet timeless perspectives of contemporary art.
